I found this video on We Are the Media. Gabe and his friend Pavle got stopped by the police in Amsterdam, Holland and promptly video-blogged the unpleasant experience of being illegally stopped and frisked. Looks like something that would happen in Singapore.

I suspect this is why where are so few vloggers in Singapore. They'll probably think we're terrorists, shooting footage to send back to Afghanistan.

Say-So is a sort of comments/poll/kinda-like-email web app that enables you to start a 'conversation'. I don't know how to explain it. Just go over and take part.

I've sent an email to luminaries like Lee Kuan Yew and Lee Hsien Loong notifying them of this poll. Just for kicks. I wonder if they'll actually take notice. Or even care about the results. It'll be interesting to find out.

ASIFA-Hollywood has a program to restore classic cartoons, not just for release on home video, but in the original theatrical format so they can be seen on the big screen the way they were intended to be seen. People can contribute to "Adopt A Cartoon" in danger of being lost to film deterioration. One of the films ASIFA had a hand in restoring hasn't been seen much outside of the UCLA Film & Television Archives and at festivals. It's called "Swing, You Sinners" and it's probably the most mindbending cartoon ever made. Just when you think it can't get any weirder, or any better, it gets a whole lot better and a whole lot weirder. Check it out.... I guess it's high time to explain our absence on the Inkernet. Don't worry. The MDA isn't holding a knife to our necks. We don't have a non compos on our heels warning us to stop doing what we're doing. Nothing of that sort has happened.

What has happened however, is almost as exciting. We're working on a proposal for a brand spanking new podcast. The ironic thing is, the proposal is for MDA's new content initiative called Synthesis. I can almost imagine Dr. Richard Lim going "Oh what cheek!" But, well.

We're currently looking for presenters. But we prefer the term 'podjocks''. So if you're media savvy and interested, do drop us a mail. We'll be launching a proper hunt in the coming months but this is sort of an early call for podjocks.

Also, if you're a web designer familiar with designing for Movable Type/Wordpress or Blogger, we wanna hear from you as well!

You think we rock and you wanna invest in the show? What's stopping you! :)

A video sharing web portal (think YouTube) is also in the works. Submissions wll be open primarily to media students and it'll be a way for them to watch/comment/rate each others' works. It'll be like an 'underground' online filmmaking scene where connections will be made and talents will be recognized and stars will be born.

We're talking to YouTube about it and we're deciding if we shd approach Synthesis for this project as well. I've enquired about all the other goverment schemes but they don't support the idea as it's based on the web. Synthesis is the only initiative that requires your project to be based on the web. So, they're not likely to refuse, right? Right?

Even then, the project is set to cost about 20k. The grant is half of that.
Well. Any takers?

I must admit that we're sorta neglecting the Pilot n' Jo Show coz of all this. But we are working on it. Here's the update. We contacted Martyn See for an interview but he declined. And understandably so. There's too much attention on him and he'd do well to lay low for a while.

This whole saga is completely ridiculous. Even if Martyn See gets convicted (and I hope to goodness he won't) there is no bloody way the authorities are going to get Singapore Rebel off the web. There will always be people linking to it. People will be getting it off file sharing networks. Torrents will be put up. They'll burn CDs and pass them along to their friends. So what the fuck do they think they're doing?

An intimate session with Martyn with him telling us all about his thoughts on the case and about his motives for making Singapore Rebel and all that might help his situation. I can't guarantee it, of course but I'd make sure it won't worsen it, that's for sure. So, Martyn..if you're reading this, do think about it again. But no pressure, of course, my friend.

We also thought of another possible interview. Martyn suggested we probe the Films Act itself. And so, I talked to a contact from the SWA to put me in touch with someone from the MDA who would give us an interview. Expectedly, I'm still waiting to hear from him.

Who else could we interview? Who do you wanna hear from? What do you wanna hear about? Give us some ideas! We're taking requests!

I am Niraj Pilot and I am one half of the Pilot n' Jo show. My partner in crime is Ahmad Johal. Recently, we did an interview with SDP Secretary General, Dr. Chee Soon Juan about the freedom of speech and free media in Singapore.

The interview sparked a lot of debate about the discussion of politics on the internet and the need for self censorship. Local media laws were also debated and scrutinised.

Bush is on his rounds, doing his monkey-show. On CNN, as if right on cue, two young Black girls come up to him while he's touring the (curiously sanitary-looking) disaster zone and he embraces them and kisses their foreheads and walks away with them as they cry into his shoulders.

The Monkey was at least in part responsible for the widespread devastation. He did slash funding for levee projects to pay for the Iraq war.

If you found CNN's coverage of the disaster disturbing, I'm afraid the situation is much more bleak. (Technorati link, pics and video.) The online edition is worth a read though. A Reuters article opens with this somber line.

With the rotors of President George W. Bush's helicopter sounding overhead, New Orleans' poor and downtrodden recounted tales of murder, rape, death threats and near starvation since Hurricane Katrina wrecked this city.

Chee Soon Juan from the Singapore Democrat Party has come up with radioSDP and he released a 9 minute 'podcast' yesterday.

The podcast is a way for the Party to by-pass the state-controlled media in Singapore. Airwaves in the country are monopolised, cable television is owned by a government-linked company, satellite dishes are banned, and the press is controlled by the ruling party. The Internet remains a medium that the Government finds it hard to censor, although it has enacted many laws aimed at curtailing the use of the Internet for political purposes.

That's what I thought too. Until I read that MDA's announced that "podcasting does come under the current regulatory framework. It is still studying developments in this area."

So now, I'm pissed.

The government's attempt to curb free speech usually made me tut and shake my head in disappointment but now that the MDA's talking about coming into the picture and censoring what we podcasters have to say, I feel like it's stepped on my turf. And it's making me mad.

I'm not a supporter of the SDP and neither am I big fan of the PAP. I do appreciate what they've done to get the economy out of the gutters and make Singapore what it is today. But times have changed.

I remember pundits describing Lee Hsien Loong's appointment as the Prime minister as a 'breath of fresh air' and envisioning a new Singapore where the people and government are more open and all that crap, and I hoped for some kind of change. So far, nothing's happened.

In fact, they seem to be upping themselves in the bullshit department.

HUNG AT DAWN is a concert by local bands to remember Sam, Shanmugam Murugesu, who was executed at 6 am, Friday, 13th May 2005. And the authorities have banned any use of Shanmugam's picture in all flyers and banners.

The police have slapped a ban on the use of Shanmugam's face in all publicity and information material pertaining to Friday's concert against the death penalty in Singapore. The reason given that they were concerned that the organisers would be "glorifying" an "ex-convict" and "executed person".

This marks a new development in Singapore history of censorship--that someone's image is censored because the person looks too nice--too decent a human being.

It is also gravely worrying that because a person has been executed the authorities then believe they have ownership--copyright over his image.

Ok, so I went to Podcastalley to check out if there are any new Singaporean shows out. I have this page bookmarked.

However, I was greeted with the 'site down' page. I wasn't surprised; apparently they were upgrading their servers and in the meantime, they had the 'site down' page up.

I've seen Podcastalley go through quite a number of upgrades and maintanence work and I've seen that cartoon thingy before.

Whoa. We got an email from a guy with a link to this site with a long rant about the Mediacorp Monopoly. He's really pissed off. And the Pilot n' Jo Show is mentioned.

For most of the article, he's giving ideas on how to boycott Mediacorp. At the end of the article, however, we see why he's so passionate about the idea.

I am convinced that there are Singaporean writers and directors (amongst other types of artistes) that can bring forth regionally excellent work. They are now limited by lack of opportunity because of the system currently in place and perpetuated by a media monopoly.

So let's do this for ourselves and for the future media scene of Singapore. We can compete with others regionally and internationally only if we break the current monopoly system and allow new voices and new creative/business models to emerge.

Let's stay wide awake for this decade's media revolution. Better yet, let's jump in and make it happen.

Well! Look what we have here!

We've moved on from free hosting on Archive.org and Tim Madden's podcast logos to something a little more convenient and eye-pleasing. We have to pay lah, but it's worth it. Audioblog is a really great service and it takes the whole process of podcasting much, much more pleasant.

Apart from that, we now also have Skype voicemail! We really appreciate the emails from you guys all these months but for those who'd rather talk, you can now leave us a voicemail about how much you love the show! :)

You gotta have Skype to use it but then, who doesn't have Skype nowadays? (If you're cringing after reading that coz you're one of those who don't have Skype, you know what to do.) ]

Hey there lovely fans! Today, I will attempt to show you how Jo and I managed to get this podcasting thingy working.

If you listen to the first few podcasts, I'm sure you would agree that the quality kinda well, sucked. That's right. It sucked. We admit it. We admit it, ok?! There was no reason for all the colorful language in your emails!!!! You damned dirty bastards!!!

*ahem*

You would find many tutorials on how to podcast if you just Googled for it. Actually, it's quite a no-brainer if you're podcasting alone. Same thing if you're podcasting with another hare-brained individual in the same room. But! If you wanna be in your room at your place and you wanna record ya conversation with your friend who's in his room at his place, then things get a little tricky. But just a little, lah.

There are many ways of doing this. Give your brain a workout here, here and here,

So basically, we wanted to get on Skype and record our conversations. Sounds straightforward, doesn't it? But, no. This involves getting virtual audio cables (which costs US$40, my friends) and spending precious time patching and configurating your audio signals and tearing your hair out in the process. No thanks ah.

So we came up with a rather ingenious workaround. (At least, we'd like to think so) It's really quite easy.

Jo and I log on to Skype. We then open up Audacity. After some horsing around, we decide it's time to start, so we hit record. Audacity starts recording. We talk nonsense for about 30mins to an hour before deciding we've had enough and we go on and press stop. So now we have two different audio files. My audio file comprises of only my voice. Likewise, Jo's audio file comprises of only his voice. We need to sync it together.

Jo converts his file to an mp3 (you need the free LAME encoder for this), zips it up and sends it to me via Grouper. He needs to zip it up coz Grouper doesn't allow the sharing of audio files. If you're too lazy to zip it up, go on and use MSN or Yahoo Messenger or ICQ or whatever you prefer but we find Grouper to be considerably faster.

Anyway, I receive it in about 5 minutes. I sync up the tracks, add in music, do some editing and voila! A freshly baked podcast via Skype without spending a single cent!

So there you have it. That's the ingenius (aka cheapskate) way of doing things. If you have a little money to burn, just save yourself some trouble and get Mixcast Live. If it doesn't work for you, you can get a full refund. Well, that's what they say anyway.

Sure or not free!

You can get free content hosting on Archive.org and Ourmedia.org (soon to be launched) and a free blog from Blogger.com. All you really need to spend some money on is a mic. But who doesn't already have one nowadays?

Just slap on a Creative Commons license on ya podcasts and share them with the world. It'll make the world a much sunshinier place.

Ok lah. But I want to listen to more podcasts ah!?

And Tim and Tony are hilarious! The Godfather of Podcasting, Adam Curry is also quite a treat! And you can't mention all these people without including Dawn and Drew.

You can get iPodder and subscribe to all those feeds (the Pilot n' Jo show's is right here) and it'll download all those audio files for you automatically. Just upload them into your iPod (or any other mp3 player) and listen to them anywhere and anytime you want!

Oh and by the way, you can enable your feed for podcasting at Feedburner with SmartCast™. Just check the option. It's as simple as that.
